détours: Sarah Burger
21 - 30 August 2019
How does art tell its stories? What language and what alphabet does it use? How exactly do we hear and understand them? And what does aesthetics mean? Presenting a new series of works in an installation by Sarah Burger, the second edition of our detours exhibition series investigates our aesthetic relationships. We believe art lives and finds its expression in the aesthetic experience. It is a slow, precarious and fleeting process and seems to us to be an urgent requirement and a deficiency of our up-and-down-scrolling, left-and-right-swiping everyday lives. With detours we try to create situations, that not only invite to take five and linger, but also open up detours in the perception of the works.
The series «Fernweh» is based on old photonegatives and diapositives of various landscapes taken at the time when the first portable photo cameras came into use. Those negatives and diapositives are in the meantime around 100 years old. Their materiality shows traces of decay: the chemical processes are slowly eating at the photographs, and in doing so create abstract images. The photographs used for “Fernweh” are found in an online archive. As a result of the digitalization of analogue photographs, the material damages become part of the pictures. This series shows enlarged details from this process of decay.
